{"id":98,"date":"2008-10-27T21:49:32","date_gmt":"2008-10-28T04:49:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lookforwardconsulting.com\/wordpress\/?p=98"},"modified":"2025-11-18T11:47:44","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T11:47:44","slug":"without-trust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/es\/2008\/10\/27\/without-trust\/","title":{"rendered":"Without Trust&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2026you cannot have collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>My first stop at the\u00a0SD Best Practices 2008\u00a0was a tutorial called \u201cCollaboration Works!\u201d by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ellengottesdiener\/\">Ellen Gottesdiener<\/a>.\u00a0 I am familiar with many collaboration techniques, but I was looking for some additional tools and tricks (which I will include as separate posts later) and maybe sometime insight on some tricky issues from work.\u00a0\u00a0 Ellen asked everyone what their personal goal for the workshop was and mine was: \u201clearn how to foster commitment in an environment of jaded people\u201d (which might speak more to the goal owner than the actual people he works with).<\/p>\n<p>I have spent a lot of effort lately trying to help people act more collaboratively, but they often hold back and are tentative.\u00a0 True collaboration is elusive.\u00a0 It seems as if there is often something (or someone) else \u201cin the room\u201d acting as an obstacle to collaboration.\u00a0 Maybe it is me &#8211; ya never know, so I asked Ellen what she might identify as the problem.\u00a0 Her answer was that a prerequisite for collaboration is trust.\u00a0 That if there is no trust among the team member and\\or between the team and management, there will be no collaboration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Duh!\u00a0\u00a0<em>Trust\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; you have to have\u00a0<em>trust\u00a0<\/em>first! The issue had been staring me in the face for a long time, but Ellen finally gave me a word for it &#8211;<em>trust<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We had a further dialgoue trying to dig deeper on how to overcome this obstacles.\u00a0 She suggested that one needs to build safety within the team first before they have the capacity to share with management.\u00a0\u00a0 If the team did not feel safe with each other, they will not give management their candid opinions.\u00a0 Her recommendation was to use visioning, chartering and retrospectives as tools to bring feedback to management that the team has issues around trust.\u00a0 She also mentioned that incongruent behavior from management, i.e. \u201cno overtime, but stay late to get it done\u201d, will also further erode trust.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2026you cannot have collaboration.
