{"id":8765,"date":"2026-05-13T16:05:30","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T15:05:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/?p=8765"},"modified":"2026-05-28T12:43:44","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T11:43:44","slug":"how-to-crush-a-providers-soul-one-click-at-a-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/es\/2026\/05\/13\/how-to-crush-a-providers-soul-one-click-at-a-time\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Crush a Provider\u2019s Soul, One Click at a Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Davita\u2019s left leg was fidgeting nervously as Dr. Anapol was, once again, fussing with her computer.\u00a0 Davita came to the clinic to talk about a personal health issue, not to watch the doctor direct all her attention at a machine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Anapol could feel the frustration building in the exam room.\u00a0 But there was little she could do.\u00a0 Last night, IT pushed an update that rearranged the layout of her dashboard and added options unfamiliar to Dr. Anapol.\u00a0 Glancing under the desk, she could see Davita\u2019s leg fidgeting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As she made the final click in this cumbersome workflow, Dr. Anapol let out a disappointed sigh and turned her attention back to Davita, \u201cOK, let\u2019s start over from the beginning\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Two Halves of Value<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In healthcare operations, when a provider sighs, it\u2019s a clear sign of an unbalanced value equation.\u00a0 Most COOs and CFOs focus on the tangible side of the value equation.\u00a0 It\u2019s easier to model how a new technology might reduce costs, increase revenue or expand clinical capacity.\u00a0 These metrics are comfortable because they directly impact the bottom line and fit neatly into a quarterly report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these metrics are vital to the business model, they represent one half of the value equation.\u00a0 The other half consists of intangible benefits, the human factors that dictate technology usage, provider satisfaction and patient retention.\u00a0 When a solution ignores these variables, it fails to earn adoption, regardless of what your financial model predicted.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why a Focus on Tangible Benefits Often Fails<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the scenario above, I\u2019m certain that IT and informatics checked every box in the project plan.\u00a0 They deployed a solution that satisfied all the business requirements and would deliver all the tangible benefits that were modeled in a spreadsheet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, the update, and its accompanying user experience (UX), failed to provide any intangible benefits to the provider or the patient.\u00a0 In fact, the update degraded the provider-patient experience by increasing the stress, frustration and anxiety felt by Davita and Dr. Anapol.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn\u2019t have to be this way.\u00a0 Alan Cooper, a pioneer in UX design, says the goal of a software-enabled solution is to create delight &#8211; a feeling of joy, surprise or satisfaction &#8211; as users interact with a solution that solves their problems in a way that is both elegant and intuitive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A well-designed UX enables providers to deliver excellent care to their patients.\u00a0 A poorly-designed UX adds undue burdens to providers and distracts them from being present with patients.\u00a0 If your tools crush the souls of your providers a tiny bit with every interaction, you\u2019ve got a problem.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Three Questions to Uncover Intangible Benefits<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next time you invest in new technology or update your existing technology, ask questions to uncover the intangible benefits.\u00a0 In addition to the tangible benefits\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does this technology decrease fear, anxiety and\/or frustration in my providers and their patients?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does this technology increase their confidence, satisfaction and\/or ability to work at the top of their license?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If so, how?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reducing a provider&#8217;s cognitive load is not a soft objective when updating your workflows.\u00a0 It\u2019s a business requirement that secures tangible results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your technology updates are checking boxes but failing in your clinics, let\u2019s talk.
