{"id":8734,"date":"2026-01-27T11:15:46","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T11:15:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/?p=8734"},"modified":"2026-01-27T18:41:54","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T18:41:54","slug":"why-your-smart-team-cant-roadmap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/es\/2026\/01\/27\/why-your-smart-team-cant-roadmap\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Your Smart Team Can&#8217;t Roadmap"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Tell me if this story sounds familiar? \u00a0You hire the best engineers, most charismatic sales leaders and most brilliant product managers and yet, every quarter, the same frustration arises. \u00a0Dates begin to slip. \u00a0Your leadership team pivots from talking about how to grow the company to firefighting mode. \u00a0The strategy you worked so hard to create, and document with a roadmap is obsolete within weeks.<\/p>\n<p>This recurring pattern is not because your team lacks business sense and intelligence. \u00a0They are smart &#8211; you hired them. \u00a0<strong><em>It is because you are using a tactical mindset to solve a complex problem.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>The Tactical Trap<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>Research from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.productboard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/stateofproductexcellence.pdf\">Product Board<\/a> shows that nearly 50% of senior leaders admit their roadmaps fail to align with long-term business strategy or reflect how the business serves the customer. \u00a0That is a shocking statistic, but consistent with my experience. \u00a0Why? \u00a0Because organizations, big and small, try to standardize strategic planning using a tactical mindset that is inherent to centralized planning processes.<\/p>\n<p>This tactical mindset drives executive teams to think about the future as discrete chunks of work neatly arranged into boxes on a spreadsheet (or a slide deck). \u00a0As a result, strategic planning becomes a check-the-box compliance activity with little or no critical thinking. \u00a0Instead of using their roadmap as a guide to inform monthly and quarterly resource allocation discussions, the roadmap becomes obsolete as soon as the firefighting takes over.<\/p>\n<h2>Strategic Planning is a Complex Problem<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>Spreadsheets and slide decks are great for supporting tactical thinking. \u00a0But these tools fall down when applied to a roadmap. \u00a0In order to force your roadmap into a spreadsheet or three to four slides with a 16:9 aspect ratio, a massive amount of information and context has to be edited away. \u00a0This forced simplification hides the very complexity you must solve to win.<\/p>\n<p>A complex problem is any new or unusual challenge where you cannot know the solution up front. \u00a0Complex problems do not follow predictable patterns. \u00a0Complex problems possess two characteristics that render a tactical mindset obsolete:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>Multiple perspectives are required to resolve. \u00a0No single person (spreadsheet or slide deck) can see the entire problem. \u00a0To understand a complex problem, everyone must contribute their point-of-view to create a shared understanding.<\/li>\n<li>The problem changes over time.
