The Roman Voting technique is one of the decision-making frameworks I use most often with teams, in the classroom<\/span>\u00b9<\/span> and with my consulting clients.\u00a0 I believe that Roman Voting has become my go-to framework when I need to confirm a group has reached a decision because it\u2019s so simple, so fast and so fun!<\/span><\/p>\n

How Does Roman Voting Work?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Roman Voting is a simple up or down vote made with thumbs\u00b2<\/span>.\u00a0 Although many thoughtful Agile practitioners that I admire (<\/span>here<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> here<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> here<\/span><\/a>) use a version\u00a0 which allows people to vote with their thumbs sideways, I do not use that variation.\u00a0 For me, I feel that a sideways vote confuses Roman Voting with the<\/span> Decider\\Resolution protocol<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, if you are looking for a \u201cclean\u201d Roman Voting technique, here are the steps:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Everyone votes at the same time.\u00a0 Thumbs up signifies a \u201cyes\u201d (or agreement) while thumbs down signifies a \u201cno\u201d (or disagreement).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Count the number of thumbs up and thumbs down.\u00a0 Depending on the decision-making rule (consensus or majority rules), the proposal either passes or fails.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    It\u2019s as simple as that!<\/span><\/p>\n
