One of the things I strive for in my work is to make sure that when people are doing Scrum<\/a>, they are really doing it. My reasoning is that if you are going to go through all the effort and extra burden of Scrum, you might as well do it right and then decide if it is worth it. Unfortunately, in the course of my time helping teams implement Scrum I have seen a lot of what I would call \u201cbad Scrum\u201d and teams jettison the process without really doing (most of) it. Here are the common\u00a0anti-patterns<\/a>\u00a0I have come across in the last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are doing Scrum, but \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u201c\u2026 we don\u2019t have a Product Backlog.\u201d<\/li>\n
  2. \u201c\u2026 the Product Owner<\/a> does not prioritize our work.\u201d<\/li>\n
  3. \u201c\u2026 our manager tells me what to do.\u201d<\/li>\n
  4. \u201c\u2026 our ScrumMaster tells me what to do.\u201d<\/li>\n
  5. \u201c\u2026 the only thing we do is fill out the Excel spreadsheet .\u201d<\/li>\n
  6. \u201c\u2026 we don\u2019t meet everyday \u2019cause we all work right next to each other.\u201d<\/li>\n
  7. \u201c\u2026 we don\u2019t do Retrospectives.\u201d<\/li>\n
  8. \u201c\u2026 I just email my status to the ScrumMaster.\u201d<\/li>\n
  9. \u201c\u2026 there are too many meetings. Can we cut some of the meetings?\u201d<\/li>\n
  10. \u201c\u2026 it does not improve the quality of our product.\u201d<\/li>\n
  11. \u201c\u2026 it still feels like business as usual.\u201d<\/li>\n
  12. \u201c\u2026 no one removes obstacles.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
