\"sandiego\"I live in the City of San Diego<\/a>\u00a0and we have an estimated 1.4 million people living within the city limits. \u00a0Could you ever imagine someone asking the Mayor, or the City Council, “Do we really need so many fulltime fire fighters?” \u00a0Yet, a variation of this\u00a0topic comes up over-and-over again when talking about the role of ScrumMaster, \u00a0“Do we really need a fulltime ScrumMaster?”<\/p>\n

For the last five years, I have done my best to answer this question. \u00a0I can show them the list of 42 tasks for a ScrumMaster from\u00a0Bernd Schiffer and the ScrumMaster checklist<\/a> from Michael James. \u00a0We can have a twenty minute discussion on why these tasks are important, valuable and worthy and I can\u00a0tell the story of Cen\u00e9e LaTulippe<\/a>. \u00a0And, yet people still ask the question, “Do we really need a fulltime ScrumMaster?”, which suggests they are not buying it.<\/p>\n

When I gave my keynote speech<\/a>\u00a0(in Spanish) at Scrum Day Oviedo<\/a> on the topic of Fearless Journey<\/a>, I stumbled across the\u00a0metaphor of ScrumMaster as a fire fighter. \u00a0This metaphor seems to resonate with some people, so let’s explore ScrumMaster as fire fighter\u00a0to\u00a0help people understand more about the benefits of fulltime ScrumMasters and respond to this common misconception.<\/p>\n

  1. \"FirePhotography\"Fires are not planned:<\/strong> fires and emergencies happen when they happen. \u00a0Fire fighters need to be alert and available at a moment’s notice to respond to danger. \u00a0That is the same with the ScrumMaster. \u00a0The really dangerous fires to an organization, or a Team, happen during that random meeting or after a brief\u00a0hallway conversation with a senior leader. \u00a0A ScrumMaster who is doing technical work or serving on another Scrum Team, will not detect the fire\u00a0until it is has engulfed the Team, the Sprint or the organization.<\/li>\n
  2. Fire fighters\u00a0have spare capacity: <\/strong>no one expects a fire fighter\u00a0to be fighting fires eight hours a day, 365 days a year. \u00a0In fact, most of their time is spent waiting for the fire. \u00a0In the business world, we call that space capacity “slack”. \u00a0If fire fighters\u00a0were fighting fires everyday, for eight hours a\u00a0day, there is one of two things at work: an arsonist is on the lose or the fire department is\u00a0underfunded (more on this topic below). \u00a0Again, I would say we need to think the\u00a0same way when thinking about\u00a0Scrum. \u00a0If a ScrumMaster is fighting organizational fires all day, everyday, then someone needs to step back and find the arsonist starting all the fires. \u00a0A ScrumMaster cannot track down the (organizational) arsonist\u00a0without some slack and help form others (see below).<\/li>\n
  3. Fire fighters\u00a0spend their idle time doing useful work:<\/strong>\u00a0when fire fighters\u00a0are not fighting fires, they often are maintaining their equipment, training, inspecting buildings or educating people about fire safety. \u00a0This is part of the job of a professional fire fighter and important work. \u00a0So why do some people expect a ScrumMaster to do technical work, unrelated to Scrum and Agile,\u00a0when they have spare time? \u00a0Why do we expect ScrumMasters to be working on multiple teams at the same time? \u00a0ScrumMasters\u00a0have important Agile jobs to finish\u00a0when not participating or leading the Retrospectives, Sprint Reviews, Sprint Planning or the Daily Scrum.<\/li>\n
  4. \"wildfire_SD_2007\"Fireman participate in mutual aid agreements:<\/strong> in California wildfires are common in the late Summer and in the Fall. \u00a0When these types of fires exceed the capacity of single fire district, fire fighters\u00a0reach out for help from other fire districts to contain and put out wildfires. \u00a0Fire fighters can do this because they have spare capacity to share with other fire teams when a fire emergency occurs\u00a0elsewhere in the county, state or outside the state. \u00a0Once more, the same type of thinking should apply when thinking of our ScrumMasters. \u00a0ScrumMasters should lend aid when they are asked for help and reach out to others when they encounter a challenge beyond their capacity to control or handle safely.<\/li>\n
  5. Having too few firemen is dangerous:<\/strong> when a city underfunds the fire department, response times slow down,\u00a0equipment\u00a0needs more frequent repairs, training is delayed and supplies run low. \u00a0While one of these factors increases the risk to community, when many of them come together at the same time, fire stations are shut down or go into “rolling brownouts<\/a>“. \u00a0When organizations take the same attitude with underfunding their ScrumMasters, they get the same type of results – small fires turning into big fires, delayed response times and inability to respond effectively to different types of fires that occur in the business.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
