No…as long as the\u00a0Team meets ALL<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0the following three\u00a0preconditions listed below, a full-time ScrumMaster is most likely\u00a0unnecessary.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. The Team is learning from their mistakes and refining their performance\u00a0as they go.<\/li>\n
  2. The Team is learning and adapting\u00a0to the organizational idiosyncrasies, i.e. impediments, over time.<\/li>\n
  3. The Team is improving continuously and getting considerably\u00a0better month after month.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    When Teams are at this state, I would say they have achieved a state of high-performance. \u00a0If they started in this state, then something like Scrum would not benefit them. \u00a0I would suggest letting them do whatever they want because it is clearly working. \u00a0If they are not in state of high-performance, Scrum (or any Agile process), might help.<\/p>\n

    So when do we\u00a0need a full-time ScrumMaster? \u00a0When one, or more, these conditions is present within the Team.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. The Team keeps making the same mistakes over and over while product quality stagnates (or degrades).<\/li>\n
    2. The Team consistently\u00a0encounters\u00a0the same organizational impediments and responds with the same coping strategy with predictable results.<\/li>\n
    3. The Team\u00a0fails to adopt the kaizen<\/em> mindset<\/a> and their performance as a group founders.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Working through these issues at the individual, team and organizational levels is a full-time job<\/a>\u00a0for most people. \u00a0As I have mentioned before, the ScrumMaster\u00a0is eight roles wrapped in one<\/a> and it takes time to master them. \u00a0Learning these skills is certainly not yet\u00a0another unpleasant task<\/a>\u00a0for an overworked Team member (or the fictitious\u00a0“Agile” project manager<\/a>). \u00a0Nor can a ScrumMaster\u00a0work in\u00a0a different location as the Team<\/a>. \u00a0Addressing the issues listed above takes time, focus and dedication.<\/p>\n

      Finally, Geoff Watts<\/a> dedicates an entire chapter in his book, Scrum Mastery: From Good to Great Servant Leadership, on this topic. \u00a0In his book<\/a>, Geoff walks through three common scenarios, Product Owner-ScrumMaster, Team Member-ScrumMaster and one ScrumMaster for multiple teams, talks about the potential conflicts of interests, the benefits (there are actually a few) and the risks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
