ways to improve the focus of your Team at work with twelve\u00a0new ideas. \u00a0In this article I am going to concentrate on ideas that will enhance\u00a0how the Team responds\u00a0to emergent working and dealing with distractions. \u00a0For ideas on how to boost\u00a0focus when\u00a0doing the work and defining the work in meetings, check out the previous article.<\/p>\n<h3>Responding to Emergent Work<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Product Owner Decides<\/strong> &#8211; any emergent work that comes up during a Sprint goes first to the Product Owner before any Team member takes a look at it. \u00a0In Scrum, it is a Product Owner responsibility to decide if and when the Team&#8217;s focus is changed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Exchange<\/strong> &#8211; if the Product Owner decides that the emergent work needs to be done, they must exchange that work for an unstarted Product Backlog item of equal size or smaller.\u00a0 If nothing is unstarted, then they are out-of-luck.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Next 24, Next Week or Next Sprint<\/strong> &#8211; establish three categories for dealing with emergent work.\u00a0 Things that must be addressed in the next twenty-four hours, work that can wait until next week and work that will be taken care of in the next Sprint. \u00a0The Product Owner decides what category the new work falls into.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wait Until Next Daily Scrum<\/strong> &#8211; unless is is true emergency or crisis, the Product Owner will hold onto the issue until the next Daily Scrum meeting. \u00a0Bringing up the topic\u00a0while the Team is currently working introduces a distraction from the work at hand.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pager Duty<\/strong> &#8211; invariably some unforeseen technical issue or bug will arise during a Sprint that will call upon the Team\u2019s knowledge and experience.\u00a0 When this happens, the Team will designate one person who is \u201con call\u201d as the Tier One support person for the Sprint.\u00a0 This Team member will field the initial contact, investigate the situation and come up with a recommended course of action.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rotate Pager Duty<\/strong> &#8211; everyone on the Team does \u201cpager duty\u201d.\u00a0 No one does \u201cpage duty\u201d two Sprints in a row.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Dealing with Distractions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Turn Off Outlook <\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; and other notifications. \u00a0People simply do not need to respond to every single e-mail as it arrives in their inbox, especially during work sessions.\u00a0 Read your email when you take a break.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Turn Off Your Phone<\/strong> &#8211; this was a <em><strong>huge<\/strong><\/em> complaint for DeMarco and Lister in <a href=\"https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/2015\/03\/16\/peopleware-productive-teams-and-projects-3rd-edition\/\">Peopleware<\/a>, so if you actually have a desk phone make sure you turn off the ringer.\u00a0 For personal calls, all mobile phones should be set to vibrate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Internet Time<\/strong> &#8211; decide as a Team when it is appropriate to surf the Internet, check eBay, Facebook, etc. \u00a0I am not suggesting establishing some sort of Internet police or tracking system. \u00a0I am saying to have an adult conversation on what people should do when they are burned out for the day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Turn Off Instant Messaging<\/strong> &#8211; IM are somewhat helpful for distributed Teams, but for a co-located Team IM popping up while doing work\u00a0can be a bit of distraction. \u00a0Like Outlook, these notifications break\u00a0concentration and flow, so turn them off by default.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personal Calls Away From Your Desk<\/strong> &#8211; if you want to take a personal phone call, use your mobile phone. \u00a0Better yet, take (or make)\u00a0that call away from the Team\u2019s workspace.\u00a0 Listening to a co-worker review the highlights of last weekend\u2019s game or discuss an upcoming vacation is extremely distracting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bored\\Chatty Coworker<\/strong> &#8211; if you notice that you are feeling bored and can&#8217;t get anything done, <em><strong>just go home<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0Seriously, if you are distracted, you are just going to distract other people and the best place away from the Team. \u00a0If you see someone who is bored and sucking up other people&#8217;s time, suggest they take a long break, go to the gym or spend time at home with their family.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s finish\u00a0up our list of ways
