I want to use this post to talk about the concept of\u00a0design debt<\/a>\u00a0(or\u00a0technical debt<\/a>) to describe the variety of \u201cshortcuts\u201d software developers take to compromise design quality in order to gain a short term boost in productivity.\u00a0 While there may be many good reasons to take these \u201cshortcuts\u201d at the time, from that point forward any future design changes to that section of the code are more difficult, i.e. expensive to make.\u00a0 In almost all cases, most well-meaning software developers really do intend to return to the code and fix these shortcomings, but due to schedule pressures they rarely do.\u00a0 The cumulative effects of these \u201cshortcuts\u201d are called design debt and are very toxic to your software.<\/p>\n

Much like credit card debt, a small amount of design debt is acceptable.\u00a0 Unfortunately, due to the nature of software, if real attention is not spent \u201cpaying back\u201d the design debt, eventually the system in question collapses under the weight of its highly coupled design.\u00a0 I created the list below to help you spot the four stages of design debt in your system, so to avoid a \u201crepo\u201d of your software.<\/p>\n

    Impulse Buy<\/strong>\u00a0– Not doing the right thing today or having the attitude of \u201cI\u2019ll fix that tomorrow\u201d.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  2. \n
    Late Payments<\/strong>\u00a0– Adding new features to new code begins to take longer and longer.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  3. \n
    Notice of Default<\/strong>\u00a0– The project stops adding new features to enter\u00a0a \u201crefactoring phase\u201d or \u201cjust a week for clean-up\u201d.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  4. \n
    Foreclosure<\/strong>\u00a0– It simply becomes easier to re-write the system rather than modify it.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    As you get into later half of Stage Three, more and more of your resources go into paying back debt and you cannot extend the functionality of your system to keep up with market demands.\u00a0 The competitive advantage your software provided the business falls to the wayside as all your time is spent in maintaining a brittle system your customers don\u2019t even like anymore.\u00a0 Like most ailments in life, the longer you wait to apply a remediation, the more \u201cpainful\u201d the cure.\u00a0 It is far more economical to apply an ounce of prevention, by taking your vitamins in the form of daily refactoring, than wait for the \u201cforeclosure\u201d process to overcome your business assests.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
