{"id":159,"date":"2008-11-25T22:57:33","date_gmt":"2008-11-26T05:57:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lookforwardconsulting.com\/wordpress\/?p=159"},"modified":"2025-02-28T12:12:28","modified_gmt":"2025-02-28T12:12:28","slug":"my-name-is-carlton-nettleton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/es\/2008\/11\/25\/my-name-is-carlton-nettleton\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;My Name is Carlton Nettleton&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>&#8220;\u2026 I have been with the company for about a year and I am an Agile coach helping people improve their software products by focusing on communication and collaboration.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>is just about the worst way to do introductions in a big group setting.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Well, think back to the last time you were in a situation where you were asked to introduce yourself to a bunch of strangers\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you were the first person called on, you probably were struck dumb at first; the total deer-in-headlights experience.\u00a0 When you finally did speak, you felt tongue-tied and probably did not know how much detail to give, when to stop or what the facilitator was even asking.\u00a0 Of course, once you were out of the spotlight you knew exactly what to say quickly and succinctly, but there no second chances for first impressions.<\/li>\n<li>If you were some where later in the order, you probably were relieved and then had that \u201cOh crap, I\u2019m next\u201d feeling.\u00a0 Instead of listening to what the other people ahead of you were saying, you probably spent that time thinking about what you were going to say, likely drawing a blank until the person next to you started talking, getting very nervous until you blurted something out.\u00a0 In effect, short circuiting the introduction process.\u00a0 Once finished, you likely were thinking \u201cThat was OK, but it least it was not bad as hers\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Next time you need to do introductions try this short exercise of pair interviews as a much more meaningful and rich format for introductions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Ask people to form pairs with a person they do not know\\normally work with.<\/li>\n<li>Allow people 7 to 10 minutes to interview each other and take notes if needed.<\/li>\n<li>After the timebox is complete, ask each person in the pair to introduce the other.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The pair interview exercise does not put people on the spot, allows people to gather their thoughts and then to showcase themselves as the interesting and accomplished people they are.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;\u2026 I have been with the company for about a year and I am an Agile coach helping people improve their software products by focusing on communication and collaboration.&#8221; is  [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":7863,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"_price":"","_stock":"","_tribe_ticket_header":"","_tribe_default_ticket_provider":"","_tribe_ticket_capacity":"0","_ticket_start_date":"","_ticket_end_date":"","_tribe_ticket_show_description":"","_tribe_ticket_show_not_going":false,"_tribe_ticket_use_global_stock":"","_tribe_ticket_global_stock_level":"","_global_stock_mode":"","_global_stock_cap":"","_tribe_rsvp_for_event":"","_tribe_ticket_going_count":"","_tribe_ticket_not_going_count":"","_tribe_tickets_list":"[]","_tribe_ticket_has_attendee_info_fields":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[208,7,59,22,30,25,206,44],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-159","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-advanced-practitioners","category-agile-scrum","category-class-design","category-coaching","category-collaboration","category-communication","category-practitioners","category-scrum-master"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
