{"id":1549,"date":"2013-05-06T17:48:02","date_gmt":"2013-05-07T01:48:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lookforwardconsulting.com\/?p=1549"},"modified":"2026-04-15T14:47:31","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T13:47:31","slug":"scrum-gathering-las-vega-day-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/es\/2013\/05\/06\/scrum-gathering-las-vega-day-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Scrum Gathering Las Vegas &#8211; Day 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\\Greetings from Las Vegas! \u00a0I am attending the Scrum Gathering Las Vegas\u00a0and wanted to provide a summary of useful ideas and concepts for the folks at home. \u00a0If you have not attended a Scrum Gathering, seriously consider going next year. \u00a0They are a great place to learn more about Scrum, improve your network and first time attendees receive a registration discount.<\/p>\n<p>I really enjoy attending the Scrum Gatherings because I get to reconnect with peers and colleagues, meet all the people who are working hard to get things done and learn about what are people doing to make Scrum work in their organizations. \u00a0Another thing that is great about this conference, since it is pretty small (around 500 people) it is REAL easy to meet new people and start a conversation.<\/p>\n<p>So these are the sessions I attended today:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Scrum: The Future of Work<\/strong><\/span> (<a href=\"http:\/\/scrum.jeffsutherland.com\">Jeff Sutherland<\/a>) &#8211; the conference began with the co-creator of Scrum, Jeff Sutherland, discussing why he feels that Scrum is beginning to change the way <strong>ALL<\/strong> of us work. \u00a0According to Jeff, he believes one of the main reasons why Scrum is gaining popularity today is that &#8220;work sucks&#8221; &#8211; 55% of people are unhappy at work and 66% of people are actively seeking a new job. \u00a0The current work paradigm is not working for people and they desperately want something more satisfying and fulfilling. Unfortunately, while why work sucks, a lot of Scrum out there in the field sucks, too. \u00a0There was a lot in Jeff&#8217;s keynote, but I thought his advice directed executives and senior leaders would go a long way to making Scrum much more potent.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">Hold ScrumMaster&#8217;s accountable for\u00a0organizational improvements.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Hold Product Owners accountable for revenue per story point.<\/li>\n<li>Act like serious business people &#8211; have a business plan that works, provide the Teams with challenging goals, give the resources to achieve those goals and regularly ask Teams what are the problems so they can help remove them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Removing Impediments with Drawings<\/strong> (Carlton Nettleton) &#8211; this was my session that brought the concepts from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danroam.com\">Dan Roam&#8217;s<\/a> popular book, Back of the Napkin, to Scrum teams. \u00a0The ability to explain your ideas with a picture is absolutely essential when working in Scrum. \u00a0The are so many opportunities to use a drawing to help provide clarity, understanding and alignment. \u00a0IMO,\u00a0<strong>anyone<\/strong> can draw a picture since the power of a drawing \u00a0does not originate from your artistic abilities, but from your strengths as a storyteller. \u00a0My big insight from this session today was the ability to draw a picture allows us to persist and document a conversation so we may revisit it later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Doing Scrum to Being Scrum: Transforming Culture<\/strong> (Brad Swanson) &#8211; I wanted to see what Brad had to share since he is engaged with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scrumalliance.org\">Scrum Alliance<\/a> to help them learn how to apply and use Scrum. \u00a0In this standing room only session, Brad discussed how he used\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kotterinternational.com\/aboutus\/bios\/john-kotter\">John Kotter&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kotterinternational.com\/our-principles\/changesteps\/changesteps\">Eight-Step Process for Leading Change<\/a>\u00a0to assist a large global company change their culture from just doing Scrum practices to really understanding and acting on the Spirit of Scrum. \u00a0From a consulting perspective, I found a lot of good ideas that I could use to help enable change in future organizations. \u00a0One of the best parts of the session was when Brad asked the participants to stand-up and identify which of Kotter&#8217;s eight steps would be most difficult for their organizations. \u00a0More than half the room were clustered around Step 3 (Developing a strategy &amp; vision for change) and Step 4 (Communicating the strategy &amp; vision for change). \u00a0I definitely agree with this informal poll since most organizations do not spend time thinking through their vision for change and even less communicating it.<\/p>\n<p>In late afternoon, I bounced back and forth between these two sessions since they were right next to one another.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blueprint for the Future<\/strong> (Ron Jefferies &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hendricksonxp.com\">Chet Hendrickson<\/a>) &#8211; when these two experts come together, something really unique and special happens and this session was no different. \u00a0This presentation offered a number of topics that the two of them believed would be upcoming challenges to the future of Scrum. \u00a0I was not able to capture everything, but these are the ones that I remembered.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">Product Owner role &#8211; being a good Product Owner is really hard and we have just begun to codify the patterns of success.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Enterprise Scrum &#8211; we are in the early days of understanding how to do this. \u00a0Ron believes this might not even be possible since the greatest challenges are mostly cultural.<\/li>\n<li>Estimation and deadlines &#8211; forget trying to get good at estimation, instead focus on getting better at steering the business to the deadline.<\/li>\n<li>What is available for the Scrum practitioners? &#8211; Scrum trainers spend way too much time and effort with entry-level courses (CSM and CPO); more time should be dedicated helping people get good at Scrum or offering more advanced topics.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Agile Antipatterns: The ScrumMaster&#8217;s Guide to Traps, Tripwires and Treachery<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/weisbart.com\">Adam Weisbart<\/a>)- Adam is a new, Certified Scrum Trainer (he has got a <strong>HILARIOUS<\/strong> ScrumMaster video you <strong>GOT<\/strong> to see) and I was curious to see him in action. \u00a0From this session on how to get eliminate and avoid these behaviors, I wrote down these three key points:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">Stop, Collaborate and Listen (hat tip to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vanilla_Ice\">Vanilla Ice<\/a>) &#8211; don&#8217;t get wrapped up in the same-old-same-old conversations. \u00a0\u00a0Stop arguing, step out of your starting positions and look for ways to focus on common interests. \u00a0If you can take a moment to listen to your peers and colleagues, the seed of collaboration will germinate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Unleash your Annoying Toddler &#8211; children have this tendency to ask &#8220;why?&#8221; a million times, so why is it so hard for adults to adopt the mindset of the annoying toddler to get to the root cause of their challenges in the workplace. \u00a0Adam introduced an organizational impediment form from Michael James. \u00a0The aspect I liked about this simple form was it introduced two important elements to the conversation about impediments &#8211; the business impact <strong>AND<\/strong>\u00a0emotional impact. \u00a0Both are essential if we really want to drive these impediments out of the organization.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/agilemanifesto.org\">Agile Manifesto<\/a> as the heart of Agile &#8211;
