Team Decay &#8211; Agile San Diego, Jan 3rd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I will be speaking tomorrow night on the topic of Team decay with a friend and colleague, Lisa Monta\u00f1o, at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agilesandiego.org\">Agile San Diego<\/a>. \u00a0For the past eight months, we have been cooking up a new class to teach ScrumMasters and other people in leadership roles the essential skills to be successful as a ScrumMaster. \u00a0This course was created out of a conversation we had many months ago and was documented in this <a href=\"http:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/2012\/04\/04\/what-is-a-scrummaster\/\">post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the session at Agile San Diego, we are going to talk about a concept &#8211; decay &#8211; from Max DePree&#8217;s book, Leadership is an Art. \u00a0I was really attracted to this topic since I feel this session now gives us a vocabulary to talk about a real phenomenon we see on Scrum Teams. \u00a0Everyone knows when you first get started with Scrum everything is (usually) great. \u00a0Things happen, people are excited, quality goes up and the customer and business are happy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/574602_59001718.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignleft wp-image-1435\" title=\"It stinks!\" src=\"https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/574602_59001718-300x225.jpg\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/574602_59001718-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"158\" \/><\/a>Then&#8230;something happens and the whole thing begins to suck. \u00a0In most cases, this &#8220;something&#8221; is not a dramatic event, but rather there is a shift in the air. \u00a0Almost like a recognition that something stinks and\u00a0that stink is decay (XPer&#8217;s might call this a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/martinfowler.com\/bliki\/CodeSmell.html\">smell<\/a>). \u00a0In Max DePree&#8217;s book, he\u00a0talks about recognizing and intercepting <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Entropy\">entropy<\/a> and deterioration [decay] as one of the most difficult jobs for a leader. \u00a0DePree goes further to say that &#8220;many people in large organizations relish entropy&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It is my belief that entropy\\decay is one of the major reasons why many Scrum teams begin to fade after the initial rush of enthusiasm. \u00a0So DePree&#8217;s book identifies the symptoms, but what is the cure. \u00a0I think the solution is, in part, restoring the role of ScrumMaster back into being the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Servant_leadership\">Servant Leader<\/a>\u00a0for the Team. \u00a0Come to the talk to learn more about how a skilled Servant
