{"id":104,"date":"2008-10-29T21:53:45","date_gmt":"2008-10-30T04:53:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lookforwardconsulting.com\/wordpress\/?p=104"},"modified":"2026-03-04T12:07:58","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T12:07:58","slug":"mistake-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/es\/2008\/10\/29\/mistake-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"Mistake Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here are some common mistakes people make when trying to make their organization more Agile from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chacocanyon.com\/aboutrick.shtml\">Rick Brenner<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/nancy-van-schooenderwoert-37882\/\">Nancy Van Schooenderwoert<\/a>.\u00a0 My comments are in italics.<a href=\"https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/2008\/10\/29\/mistake-museum\/384-art-museum-ext-best-thumbnail\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-422\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignright size-medium wp-image-422\" title=\"384-art-museum-ext-best-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/384-art-museum-ext-best-thumbnail-300x225.jpg\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/384-art-museum-ext-best-thumbnail-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"384-art-museum-ext-best-thumbnail\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27300%27%20height%3D%27225%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20300%20225%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27300%27%20height%3D%27225%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/384-art-museum-ext-best-thumbnail-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/384-art-museum-ext-best-thumbnail-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thescrumacademy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/384-art-museum-ext-best-thumbnail.jpg 600w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-orig-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Underestimate the politics of the organization.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Avoid this trap at your peril.\u00a0 As Ken Schwaber likes to say, \u201cA dead sheepdog is no use to the team.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Use an Agile process to run the Agile transition.\u00a0 Use tried and true change management techniques from the project management world.<\/li>\n<li>Allow the internal auditors to credential the Agile process.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Frequently internal auditors do not know what they are dealing with when confronted with an Agile project.\u00a0 My experience is they often gum up the works to make\u00a0<strong>their<\/strong>\u00a0lives easier.\u00a0 While these people are normally trouble, learn what they need.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Scale up rapidly after a few successful pilot projects.\u00a0\u00a0<em>I call this early institutionalization or freezing the transformation process in an immature state.\u00a0 You would never eat a green strawberry, so why push an immature system to your entire company?\u00a0 Learn why the pilots are successful and amplify those factors while diminishing the obstacles.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The early pilot projects are not run like projects; there are no goals, budget or customers.<\/li>\n<li>The \u201cwrong\u201d project was selected for the Agile team; i.e. legacy systems, unavailable customers, ill-defined goals, etc.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Agile teams need to work iteratively in close collaboration with a customer who cares about the project and has the authority to make decisions.\u00a0 Anything less causes \u201cissues\u201d.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Select team members who are actively hostile to Agile.\u00a0<em>Agile relies on the goodwill of the participants to try new things in order to succeed.<\/em><em>Skepticism is good, but too much makes the whole thing a farce.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Treat people as interchangeable resources and swap in-and-out at will.\u00a0<em>Agile asks people to make commitments by encouraging them to take ownership of products.\u00a0 How much ownership do you really have when you are on four different teams?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are some common mistakes people make when trying to make their organization more Agile from\u00a0Rick Brenner\u00a0and\u00a0Nancy Van Schooenderwoert.\u00a0 My comments are in italics.
